ASL Staff Interpreter/Disability and Access Resources Specialist (180-day)

The ASL Staff Interpreter/Disability and Access Resources Specialist will provide interpreting/transliteration services for students to ensure communication access with faculty, staff, administrators and other students in all facets of College life. Position follows a 180-day calendar with possible evening and/or weekend hours. The successful candidate must have and maintain certification from RID and/or NAD, as well as current registration or eligibility for registration with the PA ODHH or obtain certification within 6 months of hire (Continued employment is contingent upon receipt of certified status.). Applicants who possess provisional registration with Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry will be considered.

EDUCATION

• Associate's Degree in Interpreting or other qualifying experience. Required
• The successful candidate must have and maintain certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) and/or National Association of the Deaf (NAD), as well as current registration or eligibility for registration with the PA Office for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Applicants who possess provisional registration with Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry will be considered. Continued employment is contingent upon receipt of certification. Required
• Bachelor's Degree Bachelor's Degree in Interpreting or Special Education. Preferred

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

• RID - Interpreter For The Deaf Licensure. Required
• NAD (National Association for the Deaf). Required
• NAD-RID (National Interpreter) certification. Required

EXPERIENCE

• Two (2) years of interpreting in a post-secondary education environment. Required

ABILITIES AND SKILLS

• Knowledge of, and adherence to the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID)/National Association of the Deaf (NAD) ethics of interpreting and professional code of conduct. Required
• Knowledge of deafness/hearing loss and the linguistic, social, culture, and developmental effects. Required
• Knowledge of professional practices affecting interpreting. Required
• Skilled in a wide range of sign language systems on abstract and concrete topics. Required
• Ability to work independently and within a team. Required
• Strong organizational skills to effectively work in a multi-tasking environment. Required
• Demonstrated commitment to quality services to students. Required
• Ability to work effectively and professionally with diverse groups. Required
• Broad knowledge of a variety of academic subjects. Required
• Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instruction. Required
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in written form. Required
• Must possess a valid driver’s license. Required
• Demonstrated knowledge of ADA, Section 504 and other state and federal regulations regarding students with disabilities. Required
• Skilled in C-Print. Required
• Functional ability with or aptitude to learn microcomputer functions. Preferred

Provide sign language interpreting Services for students in campus and classroom settings.

Interpret for students at various College functions and events throughout the year both on-campus and off campus.

Communicate with and gather information from faculty in order to effectively prepare classroom sessions for both faculty and students.

Encourage the enhancement of deaf culture awareness among faculty, students, and staff.

Act as liaison and problem solver with students, staff, and faculty regarding issues among faculty, staff, and students.

Interpret graduation ceremonies for the May, August, and December graduations.

Interpret for special programs on campus, i.e., orientation, campus tours, visitations days, etc.

Assist with scheduling contractual interpreters for a variety of assignments.

Assist with the training of faculty and staff on deafness and utilization of an interpreter.

Be familiar with adaptive equipment and assistive technology used by students as well as how to assist them with use of such.

Review documentation, identify and provide appropriate accommodations and services to enrolled and prospective students with disabilities.

Provide on-going support services for students with documented disabilities including a proactive approach to meeting with students on a regular basis throughout the academic year.
